TROG is a 1970 Warner Bros. sci-fi/horror/thriller motion picture starring Joan Crawford. This is Joan Crawford's infamously bad swan song, the story of an anthropologist (Crawford) who makes a study of a missing link, whom she dubs "Trog" (short for "troglodyte"). The film is extremely cheap and cheesy. This may be Joan Crawford's last appearance, but what a way to end your career! This movie is so badly written and so poorly acted, most of the parts intended to be thrilling just end up being funny or being a bore to sit through. There are many unintentionally funny scenes and not-so-scary parts of lackadaisical violence. "Trog" is obviously not one of Joan Crawford's better films but does allows you to take one last look at her in those final years of her ever desperate clinging to fame....and my friends and I have had a lot of fun with the line Joan delivers in the film, "there will be no need for you to return to the lab" and her attempts to be overly dramatic in some scenes can be hysterical at times. This was the last movie of Joan Crawford's long and storied career, and it's sad that she had to end her career with this dog. The budget was so small on this picture that the actor portraying Trog didn't even have a full costume...it's obviously some guy wearing a rubber ape mask and nothing more to make him look like "The Missing Link". Joan was a good actress and to her credit she tries to infuse her character of Dr. Brockton with some dignity, but the problem is that the story is unbelievable. The dialog is unintentionally hilarious, especially when Joan scolds the Trog like he is a naughty child. Also, there were rumors that Joan was a heavy boozer at this stage in her life and that she was drunk for most of the filming of this movie. If it is true that Joan was on the sauce during the filming of this movie, well, who could blame her? This movie is a gas, truly terrible and truly fun at the same time. Joan Crawford's last feature film aptly demonstrates the descent into alcoholism upon which daughter Christina would later capitalize in the book and film "Mommie Dearest." Made on a shoestring budget that obviously didn't allow for elaborate make-up or costumes (the title character, a missing link living in a cave in England, is very obviously an athletic man of economical stature in a plastic mask, loincloth and one of those hairy sweaters Sonny Bono used to wear), "Trog"'s ardurous filming schedule obviously didn't allow for dialogue coaching or retakes, either. Ms. Crawford is obviously quite drunk as she slurs her way through long-shots, then startlingly bright-eyed and sober in close-up's in the same scene.

PLOT SYNOPSIS:
In England, some students are mysteriously murdered. A search team is sent out to kill the creature suspected of killing the students. The creature is captured and brought to anthropologist, Br. Brockton. Dr. Brockton realizes the creature is the "TROG" the missing link between man and ape. She decides to study it and educate it. Just as she was making progress, "TROG" escapes and abducts a little girl. Brockton and colleagues franticly search for Trog hoping to find it before the police do...
