Plot Outline Set in the 25th century, the story centers around a man and a woman who rebel against their rigidly controlled society.
Plot Synopsis: George Lucas adapted this, his first film, from a short he made at University. THX 1138, LUH 3417, and SEN 5241 attempt to escape from a futuristic society located beneath the surface of the Earth. The society has outlawed sex, with drugs used to control the people. THX 1138 stops taking the drugs, and gets LUH 3417 pregnant. They are both thrown in jail where they meet SEN 5241 and start to plan their escape.

'THX 1138' is a chilling look at a 25th-century totalitarian state where mankind is stripped of any individuality. People are numbered drones, and a government-enforced program of sedating drugs controls the populace. The story's title character, THX, is a factory worker whose life is irrevocably changed when he stops taking his mind-numbing drugs.

"THX 1138" is set in a dystopia and is more or less in the spirit of "Brave New World" and "1984." The story takes place in what is apparently an underground city where people are made docile by medication and kept under constant surveillance. The workers, who are shaved bald and wear white uniforms, have alphanumeric designations instead of names-for example, the protagonist is a man known as THX 1138 (Robert Duvall).
Circumstances arise where THX 1138 ends up off his medication, making love with a woman. This earns him felony convictions for drug evasion and sexual perversion. The rest of the movie follows THX’s experiences with the correctional system, his quest to reunite with his lover, and finally his attempt to escape to the outer world.
